Nutrition for Your Dairy HerdUnder the direction of Dr. Ken McGuffey, CPC offers a full line of feeds and consulting services to the dairy industry. Our Successful Start calf and heifer feeding programs are aimed at providing a healthy, well-grown animal ready to enter the milking string by 24 months of age. We offer dry cow programs to prepare cows for a successful transition into lactation. Each lactating ration is specifically designed for each dairy operation. Ration formulation begins with a laboratory analysis of available forages. Consideration is then given to current and potential levels of production leading to a forage and grain mix targeted for high level of milk production and improved reproductive performance while maintaining healthy cows. Once a grain mix is agreed to between the customer and CPC, that grain mix remains the same until a change is necessitated. Changes can be made when new forage bases are implemented. Dr. McGuffey maintains close contact with our dairy clients and their herd performance. He visits each farm monthly, monitors milk shipments through the Internet and is available 24/7 by phone. Forage samples are collected as needed to assure each ration remains balanced. Mix sheets are available for preparing TMR or on-farm grain mixes. Dr. McGuffey is the advocate for the cow. All his decisions and recommendations are based on what is best for the cow. He explains, "If the cows are happy, the owner will be happy."
CPC Successful Start Program
At CPC, we understand the importance of efficient livestock production. Through backgrounding 100,000+ head of beef cattle per year, CPC constantly works to keep feed products brought in at the best possible prices. In turn, CPC passes the savings on to you - the producer. The end result, "Everybody Wins!" Objective of the CPC Successful Start Program The objective of the dairy replacement program is to grow healthy, well-developed heifers prepared to enter the lactating herd at 24 months of age and weigh 1,200 to 1,250 pounds immediately after calving. Meeting this goal is the key strategy for increasing long-term milk production and profits of the dairy herd. Heifers entering the herd at 24 months will produce more milk per day of life than heifers calving at later ages. Each month beyond 24 months that a heifer has to be maintained before calving costs an additional 70-80 dollars per month. The CPC Successful Start Program provides high quality feed products to produce a premium animal that begins milking at the proper size and age. Use of Rumensin in the CPC Successful Start Program All three feeds used as part of the CPC Successful Start Program contain Rumensin. A chief cornerstone of the program, Rumensin helps to achieve greater feed efficiency while also acting as a major preventative of coccidiosis. Improvements in daily grains have been identified with the use of Rumensin in feed rations. Fly Control
Flies are a major enemy of efficient livestock production, especially replacement heifers. Flies increase the risk of mastitis and blind quarters. Products such as Altosid can be added to Success One and Success Two as a preventative of fly problems.
- Kent Milk Formula TM 1
- To aid in the treatment of bacterial enteritis (scours), Kent Milk Formula 1 milk replacer is specially formulated to meet the needs of a newborn calf. This product is an all-milk product that is fortified with the necessary vitamins, minerals, and high quality milk fat for maximum growth of the newborn calf. Kwik Mix easy mixing crystals ensure fast, easy mixing for maximum utilization of nutrients. Kent Milk Formula 1 should be used until the calf is consuming three pounds of feed per day, for three consecutive days.
- CPC Dairy Starter 18 - Medicated - Rumensin
- FOR BEEF AND DAIRY CALVES APPROXIMATELY 3 DAYS TO 3 MONTHS OF AGE. For the prevention and control of coccidiosis, CPC Dairy Start 18 is a highly palatable, strongly appealing starting ration used to help young animals take off on a solid feed program. Starter 18 provides key vitamins and minerals essential during this period of rapid growth in the heifer's development. CPC Dairy Starter 18 should be offered as early as three days of age. CPC recommends this feed not be used in conjunction with hay or roughage. As with all feeds in this program, always provide fresh, clean water. Starter 18 should be fed until the heifer reaches the 200 pound mark.
- CPC Success No. 1 - Medicated - Rumensin
- A fortified grain mix for growing dairy heifers on pasture for increased rate of weight gain. CPC Success One is an 18% complete feed designed to grow, not fatten heifers. Over-conditioned animals during this time of production tend to suffer from underdevelopment of the mammary gland. Success One utilizes cotton seed hulls for their increased digestibility. Success One will provide for average daily gains of at least 1.7 pounds per day. CPC Success One should be fed along with good pasture or hay and plenty of clean, fresh water up to 400 pounds.
- CPC Success No. 2 - Medicated - Rumensin
- The fourth and final step in the CPC Successful Start Program is CPC Success Two. Success Two is a natural progression for heifers that weight 350-400 pounds continuing the same growth pattern as the other feeds in the program. CPC Success Two is a complete feed that is designed to be fed in combination with pasture, hay or silage. CPC Success Two will provide for rate of gains to achieve the goal of getting heifers to the milk line by 24 months of age.
